Organising Your Pantry Cabinet
Pantry cabinets are some of the most frequently accessed storage areas in your home. They also tend to be among the most disorganised! Read on to discover how organising your pantry can save you time and money in the kitchen.
Pantry cabinet clean out
The best way to start a pantry refresh is by emptying the entire pantry and wiping over shelves and doors. Next, sort through every item, discarding anything that is stale, out of date or never likely to be used.
Once the de-cluttering is complete, it’s time to sort the remaining items into groups. Put like items together, such as cereals, cans, baking goods, sauces or pasta. Put items that may be ‘high use’ for your family needs, like gluten free foods, or ready-made snacks, together as well.
Pantry cabinet storage
Every pantry cabinet is unique, and depending on your needs you may find storage materials helpful for organisation. Baskets are a great way to store odds and ends such as toothpicks, napkins and utensils. Under-shelf baskets are great for easy access to bread or snacks.
Spice racks are handy if you tend to collect little bottles. A card index for packet spices will keep everything compact and easy to locate.
Clear, airtight containers that are individually labelled are ideal for dry goods such as flour, sugar and coconut. These will help prevent packet spills and keep the food fresher for longer.
Maintaining your pantry cabinet
Now that the sorting is complete, it’s time to put it all back! Place your frequently used groups such as cereals and sauces at eye level toward the front of the pantry shelves for easy reach. Any heavy items should be placed down low to avoid straining or injury if they are knocked.
Now that your pantry cabinet has been organised, maintain it by keeping an eye on use by dates and bringing any older food items to the front of each of their groups to be used first. This will save you money (and prevent waste) by ensuring all foods are used within the required timeframe.
An organised pantry means cooking will be more enjoyable and time efficient, with ease of access to all your pantry cabinet items. As an added bonus, you’ll find it easier to write your weekly shopping list too!
